My English Essays

Innovation Essay

This is the final essay of the fall semester, and we are writing about an innovation that has changed our lives and the world around us. In our essay, we had to include the background information, comparing the old and the new, the impact it has on the world, and what else it has inspired. For instance, my topic were 3D Printers, and that fell in the Robotics section. Here is a brief summary of what 3D printers are and what is their impact on the world; 3D printers are printers that can make 3D physical models using the Stereolithography process, which involved the use of UV lasers in the fabrication of objects. Their impact on our world is very positive because 3D printers can now help with the construction of houses, buildings, surgical stents, food and even organs! 3D printing is opening more job opportunities for 3D designers and programmers, all while making life easier. Nowadays, you can even print out your daily supplies instead of buying them!

Challenge Essay

This is our fourth essay of the year, and this time, we have to write about our most significant challenge and the steps we have taken to overcome that challenge. It was a challenge itself to think of a challenge, so we were stumped for a while, but i eventually decided to write about my business project and how difficult it was for me. My toughest challenge was pitching in front of judges and the whole class about our business service called TransferDocs. TransferDocs is a service that types your handwritten documents for you and turns them into digital documents. Our service required 50 cents per page we type, so we profit from it. However, the challenge wasn't coming up with the service for business class, but to get my group to cooperate. My group was very lazy and slow, so they didnt get any work done. I was furious with them because i had to do all the work, yet we barely finished in time. Another challenge in this challenge essay  was having to cut down the word count. Before, I  always wrote as much as could, and it resulted around 1000 words. Now, the guideline was no more than 350 words, so it was quite the challenge cutting my words. Since I liked my word choices, parting with some of them was espescially hard.

Persuasive Essay (LOTF)

Even though it seems like it, this isn't a persuasion essay. This is an essay about how one of the characters in Lord Of The Flies has used Ethos Pathos and Logos to convince the other boys that they should listen to him. For instance, I wrote about Ralph and how he used his leadership skills and confidence to put the other boys at ease. Without him reassuring the boys with his own faith and belief, the boys would have panicked on the island and would all die before they got rescued. Something I did well in my LOTF essay were my examples of EPL. I clearly stated the examples and what page number it was from, so I think it was pretty specific and informative. I also added explanations to my examples, so I could explain to the reader why Ralph was doing that. However, I think I could've improved on my word count and the overuse of words like because and that. Overall, I was more satisfied in this essay than my previous ones, so I could count that as an improvement.

Drought Essay

This was my second essay this semester, and it was more of a project grade than an essay because we had to research information for our country of choice and apply it to our other classes. Since it was kind of like a STEM project, we tried to apply as much of it as possible in all of our classes, mainly between English and Robotics. As you can see, if you hover over Robotics, you should see a link to the Water Project, which was a project inspired by this drought project. First off, the goal of this essay was to choose your country of choice and research about how bad their drought was, what did they do to help the country, what measures have they taken, why was the country in a drought and how were the people infected. This was a very informative essay, so my word count was up to 1019. However, there were a few things that I wanted to improve, mainly how to organize the information. Looking back at the essay, the information was all over the place and the paragraph didn’t really transition smoothly. I felt like some of the information was unnecessary and led the paragraph off topic.

My Top 3 Skills Essay

This was my very first essay in my 8th grade English class when we had to write about our top 3 skills and when we have applied it in our lives. To be honest, I was kind of surprised to see how bad my essay was compared to how my essays are now, but I guess that just means I've improved over the course of 3 months. Anyways, I've learned a lot of new transition words, how to format my essay, FANBOYS, and how to cut out unnecessary information. Some of the things that were included in my Top 3 Skills essay was how I was able to plan, prioritize and organize my work, creating and editing written reports, and solving problems. Something that I really did like about my essay was how I got straight to the point and covered all the guideline questions. However,  something I could improve in my Top 3 Essay is the transitions. My paragraphs didn’t really flow together and my sentences didn’t transition smoothly, so it didn’t seem like my paragraph was smooth.

Letter to a Government Official

This is was our first essay in the spring semester, but overall the sixth essay this year. This essay a bit different from our previous essays because this is a letter addressing to a level of government, depending on our issue. In the letter, we are addressing an issue we have either in our neighborhood or community that we would like to see solved. We also directed our letter towards an appropriate government official that has the power over our issue the most, like the neighborhood council or city council. For instance, an issue I was concerned about were the Esperanza Azteca instruments, so I wrote a letter to Mayor Garcetti to fund us more money for the purchase and replacements of instruments. I chose the mayor for this certain issue and not the city council because the mayor had some ties with Esperanza Azteca, so I wanted to reach out to him first. The reason why this letter assignment is related to 1984  is because the government in 1984 doesn't listen to the citizen's complaints or requests. It's a society where there is barely any interaction, trust, love or emotion. It's a very plain world in the novel. Therefore, using the knowledge we learned from 1984 about the worst government scenario, we are trying to improve our city by making sure the government is listening to us and not making decisions on their own. We can't let the government do everything for us. There are some things that we need to use our brains for, so we don't end up like the ignorant proles in 1984.
